Membership FAQ's
What is High Hill Striper Club (HHSC) about?
HHSC was founded back in 1952 in order to bring together individuals who have a passion for fishing. Over the years the Club has evolved into a strictly competitive surf fishing club, whose members compete amongst themselves (Interclub Competition) and with other surf fishing clubs (Interclub Competition) in the New York Surf Fishing Contest. The Clubs' guiding principles are Fishing, Fun, Friendship and Fish Conservation.
Is there a limit to the number of members?
HHSC limits membership to forty individuals. Membership is kept near forty individuals to facilitate the formation of a tight, cohesive group sharing similar fishing philosophies and to permit the development of friendships.
Why should I join HHSC?
HHSC is one of the most respected and oldest continuously active fishing clubs with a strong tradition of successful competitive surf fishing and marine fisheries conservation. You should only consider joining if you have a passion for surf fishing and you want to improve your skills and knowledge about the sport.
What are HHSCs Conservation principals?
HHSC has been a leader in fish conservation for many years. We subscribe to the principle that fishery management policies and fishing practices (catch & release) should be directed at what is best for the fish, not the various fishing groups. Many of our members are and have been members of important committees or groups that have contributed to fishery conservation policies. These committees include The Marine Fishery Advisory Council, the Atlantic States Marine Fishery Commission and the Friends of The Striper Committee. In the past, HHSC took first place in the Release Point Fish category with over 99% of the fish caught, released by its' members in the 2002 New York State Surf Fishing Contest, .High Hill Striper Club members are not permitted to engage in a sale of fish.
Where do your members like to fish?
The club contest is restricted to the marine waters of New York State. This includes the waters around Staten Island, the North and South shores of Long Island and the waters of the Hudson River up to the Tappan Zee Bridge. In addition, some of our members make regular trips to Cape Cod. Most of the members prefer fishing with artificials although bait fishing is practiced by some depending on the opportunities presented to them at any given point during the fishing season. Although High Hill Striper Club does not restrict its members from fishing in any location ,bridge caught fish are not eligible in any High Hill contest.
What is the procedure for applying for membership in HHSC?
A prospective member should contact our Membership Chairman (link at the top of this page). Upon doing so, the prospective member is invited to meet with the HHSC Board of Directors. If approved by the Board, the applicant becomes a candidate for membership. The individual is then required to attend three consecutive club meetings and fishing contests. During this time the candidate and the Club can mutually evaluate whether membership is appropriate for the individual. On or before the fourth consecutive meeting attended by the candidate, he can express his wishes as to whether or not he wants to become a member. At the fourth consecutive meeting attended by the candidate and after expressing his desire to be admitted to membership, the members of HHSC vote as to whether the candidate should be accepted into full membership.
